Roof damage by pests

When most people think of damage to their roof, they might imagine damage from severe weather, a leak from an ice dam, or even falling debris. They might not think about the kind of damage certain animals can do. Pests like rats and termites can fo a number on a residential roof, but so can other wildlife like squirrels, raccoons, bats, and even some birds. While there’s obviously no guarantee that any of this wildlife will destroy your roof, you still need to keep an eye for them and the signs of damage that they can cause.

Squirrels

Squirrels may look harmless, but they can do a lot of damage to your roof if they decide to make it their home. Their teeth are sharp enough to chew through the wood on your roof, and they’ve been known to pry up shingles. They can also make their way into your attic and rip apart your insulation if they get through your roof’s outer structure.

Raccoons

Like squirrels, raccoons can pry up shingles and make their way into your attic through a gap in your roof, even if they make the gap themselves. They tend to climb into attics when it’s time to mate and breed, which means you could have a litter of raccoons all living just under your roof if your’re not careful. Keep garbage cans closed tightly on your property, and try not to leave any potential food sources where a racoon could get it.

Rats

Rats are similar to squirrels in terms of the damage they can do to your roof. An adult rat can squeeze through an opening that’s as small as a quarter, and they can chew through wood, insulation, and even electrical wires very quickly. Check for holes in your roof or any missing or broken shingles if you suspect that you have rats in your home.

Birds

Birds generally won’t do as much damage to your home as raccoons or squirrels, but they can still be a nuisance if they decide to build a nest on your roof. These nets can get quite large, and they can block gutters and even your chimney. Some particularly troublesome birds include crows with their larger nests and woodpeckers with their tendency to do damage to just about any wooden structure.

Bats

Having a few bats near your property is not a bad thing, but they can get into your attic if their population gets out of control. If you see a lot bats near your home keep a close eye on your shingles to make sure that there aren’t any signs that bats have made their way into your home.
